As of November 5–6, 2026, multiple businesses are reporting that legitimate emails are bouncing or landing in spam when sent to @hotmail.com, @outlook.com, and @live.com addresses. The issue is on Microsoft's side — their servers are incorrectly failing SPF authentication checks on incoming mail.
What's Happening
SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is an email authentication standard that helps receiving mail servers verify that incoming email actually came from an authorized server. When it works correctly, it prevents spoofing. When it breaks — like right now — legitimate email gets rejected.
Reports started appearing on November 5, with a sharp increase on November 6. The sysadmin community is tracking widespread SPF failures specifically affecting delivery to Microsoft consumer email domains. The problem is not limited to any particular sending platform — businesses using Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and self-hosted mail servers are all affected.
We've seen this hit three of our own clients since yesterday, which is what prompted this post.
What You'll See
- Emails to @hotmail.com, @outlook.com, or @live.com addresses bouncing with SPF-related errors
- Legitimate emails landing in recipients' spam/junk folders
- Bounce-back messages referencing authentication failures — even though your SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records are correctly configured
- The issue is intermittent — some emails get through, others don't
What to Do
- Don't change your DNS or email settings. Your SPF records are fine. Changing them now will cause different problems once Microsoft fixes this.
- Check your bounce messages. If you're seeing SPF failures specifically to Microsoft consumer domains, this is likely the same issue.
- Warn your team. If anyone in your organization sends email to customers or vendors with Hotmail/Outlook addresses, let them know delivery may be unreliable today.
- Use alternative contact methods for urgent messages. Phone calls or text messages for anything time-sensitive.
- Monitor Microsoft's service health dashboard for updates — they typically acknowledge and resolve these within 24–48 hours.
